I remember a famous monk in Sri Lanka too holly to even whisper his name in public (peace be upon him), advocated physical punishment in Schools back then with evidence of failed school system in Australia that he happened to know very well.

Your comparison to countries like Pakistan have no basis. The military rulers of those countries came to power with a military junta following military coups. Similar situation in Burma. Sarath Fonseka on the other hand will be associated with one if not more political parties and would be voted in democratically by the people of Sri Lanka.
