Udugama police assaulted and fabricated charges on a 25 years old youth.

Kokmaduva mudalige Gunapala is 52 years old laborer and a father of three children. A 25 years old kokmaduva Mudalige Chaminda is his son.

Chaminda was arrested on 27.04.2011 by Wijenayaka and another policeman attached to the Udugama police. At the same time Udugama police arrested Gunapala’s sister’s son called Nalaka.

On the same day Gunapala and relatives went to see both Chaminda and Nalaka. The police neither allowed to see them nor give them food which they taken from home.

But on 29th the relatives were allowed to see both Chaminda and Nalaka. They had seen how brutally Chaminda and Nalaka were assaulted by the police. Both these young arrestees were lying on the cell floor and Chaminda was there with more difficult condition.

On 30.04.2011 both Chaminda and Nalaka were taken to the Galla Magistrate’s bungalow and remanded them on three false lawsuits. The bearing numbers of false lawsuits were 54486, 53829 and 49782. Chamina is still being in the Galle remand prison.

Chaminda was tortured by the policeman called Wijenayaka attached to the Udugama police station.

Chaminda’s father Gunapala urged the relavant authorities including IGP, Human Rights Commission, DIG Galle, SSP Galle to take legal and disciplinary actions against the culprits including Wijenayaka attached to the Udugama police. He made all these written complaints on 2011.08.29.

Pay similar attention to torture both in the south and the North By Journalist Krishan Rajapaksha


Janasansadaya is an NGO established in 1992 which has a vision to protect and promote human
rights in Sri Lanka.

Since 1992 it has been using its human and physical resources to eliminate torture in the South. They have not been worked in the North due to the lack of access.

Freelance journalist Krishan Rajapaksha shared his views during the media workshop organized by Janasansadaya in the Renuka Hotel on 3 September 2011 between 9 am to 4.30pm.

There were about 26 journalists including students from the Sri Lanka Journalism College. Among them there were prominent journalists like Gnasiri Koththigoda, Krishan Rajapaksha and
Prabuddi Ranasinha.

The one day workshop was facilitated by Mr. Chitral Perera the secretary of Janasansadaya.

The main priority was given to the reporting of torture commit by the government authorities and the government servants who have being survived because of the tax payers in the country.

At the end of the workshop the certificates were handed over to the participants.
