Stop Extra Judicial killings

A youth said to be a member of an underworld gang died this morning of police shooting at Maligawatta in Colombo. The police say the youth, who was arrested yesterday, was shot when he tried to attack the police with a hand grenade when taken to Peliyagoda to show a stock of hidden arms.

The victim, injured by the shooting died after he was admitted to Colombo National Hospital. The suspects arrested and later taken to show hidden arms have been shot by police at numerous occasions. When such a case came up the Chief Magistrate of Kalutara had said despite the statement by police that suspects had to be shot when they tried to attack police when taken to show hidden arms, the society has not taken it lightly and they expect to know the truth regarding such incidents.

However, there was a lull for such activities in the recent past but with today’ incident the same procedure has surfaced. The seriousness of such incidents is that a suspects is killed before he is proved guilty and if he was really involved in the crime he is killed before information regarding any accomplices, if there were any,  could be obtained. There were allegations that such killings occur when police too is involved in such crimes and police have carried out killings to prevent certain crimes being revealed.

Sigiriya only not enough

Daily Mirror has reported the Sigiriya Museum has been named the most attractive in South Asia by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said today.

We are happy about the news item but there are other concern matters regarding our heritage. There is a very pathetic situation at Dehiwala zoo according to media. People fro JHU have allowed to build hotels at Sinharaja forest. The latest tragedy is diywadana nilame and elephants at Pinnawala. So we want to protect these things too.

Everything in this country is in a mess. Not only human beings I mean media personel, some lawyers, opposition politicians, IDPs but the environment  including Sinharaja forest, Dehiwela zoo and innocent animals. Only the voice of multitude will stop this. We can’t  hope that the voice of the elite class will rise.

Sometimes this student was suicide because of the fear that she will be assaulted by the principal.

Geneseria pole makes 18 days hospitalization

On 11.07.2006 around 1am to 1.20am early in the morning my wife, my children, and I were sleeping at our house. I was wake up heard the dog bark. I saw a light of a torch. I opened the window and looked. I saw policemen. I identified the police officer called Lasantha who was in uniforms and holding a rifle. He told me to open the door. I did. The police officer Samaranayake holding my neck and said to put a shirt. I asked him why. My wife asked them why I was taken and also said she can’t stay in home alone and also said she came with me. Then the police officer Samaranayake threatened my wife saying come early in the morning. I wore a shirt and came outside. They had taken me few steps. Two were in uniforms. The police officer Samaranayake was in civil clothes. While the person who sells king coconut also with them.

In the garden when we were walking few steps the police officer assaulted me on my mouth. My lips were bleeding. I suffered. After that they assaulted me with a geneseriya pole on my back. I told them not to assault me. I felt sad because this type of thing was happening to me.

They took me to the main road and put me into the jeep. They accompanied me to the bank and the corporative shop to sign their petrol books. They took me around the village and came to the Waduraba police station.

At that time the police officer Samaranayake was drunk. He told me to remove my shirt. I did. The driver of the jeep holds my hand and held them up. He hand cuffed me. He made me stood in front of the cell and put one hand cuff on to the bars of the cell. I felt sad and fear. The policeman Samaranayake again assaulted my back with the geneseria pole. He hit me until the pole was broken. Then he took the broken part of the pole and again hit on my head. My head was injured. It was bleeding. I shouted saying don’t hit me. My sarong was untied and fell to the ground. I was naked. I felt very sad.

Then he collected the broken parts of the pole and went to a room. He brought a bottle of arrack and poured into a glass and drank. After that he started smoking. Then he went to a room and brought a iron bar and put it closer to a box contains fire arms. Then they took my sarong and tide around my mouth. Again he had taken the iron bar and assaulted on my buttocks. The also hit my belly. I was unconscious.

When I gain consciousness my face was directed to the toilet pit. I shouted asking water. The policeman called Lasantha throw a bottle of water to where I was. I reached to it with difficult and drank. They covered my naked body with the sarong. After drinking water I had started vomiting. I screamed and begged them to taken me to the hospital. I felt that I was going to die. I couldn’t bear the pain. I was unconscious again.

After that the police officer Nimal Ranjith came inside the cell. I told him that I was not well and asked him to take me to a hospital. After that Nimal Rajithcame with the policeman Samaranayake and another person. At that time the police man Samaranayake came with wearing a sarong. The carried me near to water tap and bath me. There was furniture like bed near it. They put me on it and helped me to wear the sarong. I shouted asking water. Then Nimal Ranjith gave me a king coconut and I drank it.

They took me with the furniture to the back side of the police station. There was a jeep parked. They put a tire inside the jeep and put me on it. I was extremely frightened. After that policeman Samaranayake with four others got into the jeep. Samaranayake was in the front seat while the other two were in the back seats. I heard that the policeman Samaranayake told the driver not to go on the main road but another road.

After that I was taken to the Karapitiya hospital. The jeeped parked closer to a big tree near the mortuary. I was again unconscious. I was put on a wheel chair and taken inside. I got conscious when my leg touched the floor. When I was taking like that way the police man Nimal Ranjith told me to tell that the people in the village assaulted me. He also told me to buy medicine and promised to give Rs.5000.

They had taken me to a lady doctor. Nimal Ranjith told her that I was assaulted by the people in the village. I said no and mentioned her that I was assaulted by the police. I was admitted to the ward number 9.There was no bed so I was put on to the floor. I asked water again. The police man who was near me kicked me using his feet. I was unconscious again. When I got to the normalcy I was laying on a bed. At time the urine tubes put and the saline was giving. There were policemen near me. My memory was not clear. My wife came to see me. I told her that the policeman Samaranayake assaulted me.

I was changed from ward number 9 to ward number 34. There was a tube connected to my kidneys. I didn’t have a clear memory. There were also people from prison to my safety. My hands were still handcuffed. I came to know that the police put fabrication of charges against me saying that I went to the king coconut seller’s house carrying a gun and threatened him.

When the policeman Samaranayake was assaulting me he asked whether I catch the killers. Then he told me that they will do the same thing for me like Sunil. Sunil was my brother in law and was killed few months ago.

When I was getting treatment at the hospital I was afraid that I was going to die. They gave me saline. I was there for 18 days. After the discharged from the hospital I came to know that the doctors told my father during the hospitalization that there was nothing to fear but earlier they were not sure about my life.

My wife and parents often visited me at the hospital. They worked hard to save my life. My wife has taken the legal action against the perpetrators.

The farther of the church came to see me and helped me a lot. With the assistance of Janasansadaya I filled a fundamental rights case before the Supreme Court saying my fundamental rights were violated by the police. The SC judgment was given last year. The Supreme Court said the police officer violated my rights and also given me compensation.

After this incident I have faced interference. The police have remanded me for several occasions.

Nexus between Sugar cane and Uva PC election

Corruption and bribe before the election victory. We can imagine what will happen after the election. Will these information about corruption receive by the ordinary folk ? Unfortunately these things will not publish in Sinhala media.

Lanka Truth has published that information is received that ‘Booker Tate’ company is spending liberally for the election campaign of two candidates contesting the Uva PC election from Monaragala District.

Last year Booker Tate company had planned to grow sugar cane in 65,000 acres of lands in Uva-Wellassa but had to abandon the project due to massive opposition from masses. Now the company is boosting the campaign of the two candidates after getting assurance from theme to allow the company to commence their sugarcane project.

One of the candidates who is contesting Monragaala District but is an outsider has promised that as soon as he is elected as the chief minister he would take measures to get permission for the company to commence the project. The other candidate bolstered by the company is a son of a minister who has joined the government from the UNP.
