Media has reported the death of Amith Kumara Liyanage (28) of Nauththuduwa, Matugama sent a shock wave through the area.
He was taken into custody by the Excise officers and found dead when he was on remand. Amith Kumara was the only son of his parents, Liyanage Ariyadasa and H.W. Punchi Nona.
He was arrested by the Exercise Officials on the charge of possessing illegal liquor and he was remanded when his relatives failed to pay the fine imposed by the magistrate. The following day his parents received a message from the Excise Office that Amith died in the Colombo National Hospital and they should attend the magisterial inquiry.
His father Ariyadasa who has still not recovered from the trauma of the shocking news said, “My son was in perfect health when he was arrested by the Excise officers on a warrant. We suspect foul play. I am sure that he had been severely manhandled in the prison. I request the authorities to hold a formal inquiry into his death. He was an innocent man although he used to drink. He worked in a bakery and earned a pittance to maintain the family. “
The government is very interested on mathata thitha, saradarma, sanskruthiya and sadacharaya. The situation in the almost all of our prisons is similar to a hell. Torture is widespread in prisons. Perpetrators like “Naufer” has done all the illegal acts and plan crimes inside the prison. Illicit drugs is another grave crime inside the prisons. So it is the duty of the ordinary people to stand for a sustainable change.
