In SB’s case the state party has violated the ICCPR.
In the past weeks SB was in the lips of people especially in the UNP supporters because its leadership is in a challenge. Most of the UNP activists have wanted SB and Sajith will give good positions in the party. In these circumstances the decision of the United Nations Human Rights Committee is very important.
Lanka-e-News, 2008 Aug. 6.20 PM has reported the Human Rights Committee (HRC) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (CCPR) has concluded after inquiries that the prohibition of UNP front liner and former parliamentarian S.B.Dissanayake’s right to be elected or to vote for a period of seven years after conviction and completion of sentence is unreasonable and amounts to a violation of article 25(b) of the Covenant. He was sentenced by the SC to two years’ jail term on December 14, 2006 for contempt of Court and consequently the stripping of his civic rights for seven years.
We as democratic voters of this country urge the Rajapakse regime to implement the recommendations of the UN body.
