Corruption in the Bar.

Media has revealed that a lawyer asked for Rs. one million to be given to a High Court judge to get a client acquitted from a case. With this news spread in Hulftsdorp courts, the High Court judges convened the lawyers and discussed the matter. The relevant judge also participated in the discussion and they agreed not to expose the name of the suspected     lawyer.

The inaction of the uthorities pertaining to the incident is discussed in the bar nowadays. This is a violation of ethics which bound the law profession. The citizens of this country have a right to complain the malpractices commits by lawyers to the Judicial Service Commission and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.

This type of corruption is not a mere surprise because some lawyers who are conducting tuition classes to law students tell publicly without a shame that “you may know how to take and give bribes”. These teachers want to make their future learned friends to adjust to the corrupt system. If this will not happen they are unable to survive.

Mary Nona of Peradeniya Teaching Hospital was assaulted by goons linked to a politician in the Central Province and she is currently being treated in the hospital. Two laborers of Kurunegala Hospital namely, Cyril and Aruna, were assaulted and the hospital staff demonstrated today (11) afternoon to protest the attack.

Ministry of Health Additional Secretary H.A. Ariyadasa has issued a circular to department heads to ask the workers who did not report to duty on July 10 to show cause and send a report within three days.

The circular has further instructed to vacate the posts of all casual and substitute workers who did not report to duty yesterday.

Mr. Saman Rathnapriya said that the circular issued asking the workers to show cause was illegal since the strike was informed in writing on June 23. According to the Article 98 of the International Labor Convention which
Sri Lanka
has ratified, the right to strike has been guaranteed.

Mr. Rathnapriya said that the politicians are conspiring to replace the casual and substitute workers with their supports covering to this strike. He vowed that the workers would strike again in such a situation.
